Connecting global climate financing with micro clean energy and forestry initiatives
A two-sided platform using digital connectivity and finance to link global climate financing with micro-scale clean energy and forestry projects in the Global South.
Digital connectivity and payment systems now make it possible to directly connect and provide financing to micro-initiatives in the Global South that displace carbon emissions or sequester carbon. 4R Digital works with these micro-initiatives to connect them to climate financing schemes, increasing the viability and sustainability of their operations — where previously, developing and validating projects took significant time and resources, slowing the flow of much-needed finance.
Climate financing processes have been burdensome and expensive
Many businesses and governments have committed to net-zero (or net-negative) carbon emissions. For businesses, this means reducing their own emissions but also trading carbon credits with projects that offset emissions — for example, by replacing fossil fuels with clean energy — or that sequester carbon through planting and maintaining trees.
Developing and registering a project to access climate financing has traditionally been time-consuming and expensive, creating a barrier that prevents micro-initiatives from entering (and benefiting from) the available financing — and limiting climate financiers to only the largest infrastructure projects, such as wind farms or hydro-power systems.
Digital technology and payments provide an efficient, affordable solution
4R Digital makes use of smart sensors, connected appliances (IoT) and associated data collection tools to track, monitor and verify small (nano) clean energy activities across Africa and Asia at a scale that hasn't been possible until recently. Digital finance allows us to design and deliver structured financial incentives at a hyperlocal scale, through wallets and other forms of distributed e-value accounts.
To support this, 4R Digital has integrated with a number of leading payment providers — including M-Pesa, ClickPesa, PawaPay, Vodacom, Stripe and Thunes — enabling secure, reliable cross-border payments and making it possible to deliver incentives directly to individuals, households and micro-initiatives across multiple countries.
4R Digital has developed a two-sided, cloud-based platform where companies with climate action commitments can incentivize large numbers of small and micro clean-energy initiatives across the Global South — designing digital finance solutions that reward clean energy activity and improve the financial health of families, small businesses and communities on the ground.
Achieving carbon emission targets requires the involvement of micro-initiatives in the Global South
4R Digital's platform demonstrates that it is possible to connect Global South micro-initiatives to global climate financing markets efficiently and cost-effectively — enabling many millions of dollars in transactions to support initiatives where the finance is badly needed.
