Petrol motorbikes rely on expensive fossil fuel and pollute the environment
Millions of petrol motorbikes are used in African cities such as Nairobi to move people, deliver goods, and keep the economy running. Despite the benefits of the mobility services, the petrol engines release carbon and pollute the air, making them costly in both economic and environmental terms.
The switch to clean e-motorbikes is desirable, but can be expensive because of the up-front costs of the e-motorbike chassis, the cost of the batteries, and the requirement for battery re-charging infrastructure to be built out at scale. Although total “cost of ownership” is lower for e-motorbikes than for petrol, the up-front costs are a barrier that must be overcome.
